Jihyo Eom reassembles the familiar grammar of contemporary media — the internet, social media, apps, and games — through game engines and physical structures, exploring the sensibilities demanded in a technological age. Working also as a commercial director, she takes as her starting point the contradictions and tensions of being both a producer and consumer of media content. She chose digital media as a profession out of genuine affection for its expressive possibilities, yet has deeply experienced the paralysis and isolation its immersiveness and addictive qualities produce, approaching her practice with the conviction that this is a shared, social condition.

Her work has consistently explored the in-between: memory and reality, the physical and the virtual, the ideal and the present. In the game and installation somewhere4u.net (2023), she examined nostalgia as it exists only in big data, experimenting with ways to return memory to the individual. A Warp to Remember (2024) questioned the outsourcing of memory while exploring whether AI can reconstruct the blurred time and space of recollection. With Bardo (2025), her focus shifts toward a critical examination of a media ecosystem where dependency escalates into immersion and addiction, incorporating materiality and the body more actively into her practice. She draws parallels between states of immersion and addiction and the trance-like ecstasy of spiritual possession, researching where media, as a medium in the shamanic sense, might take us.
